Thanksgiving Sunday at The Junior Church
Written by Candy Phillips
What an absolute delight to celebrate thanksgiving with about 40 children singing in a joyful voice "Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing, power and majesty, praise to the King!"
We began our thanksgiving children's service with worship, lifting up the name of Jesus and declaring His faithfulness, awesomeness and goodness in our lives.
Ah! Thanksgiving. All over the world celebrated so differently and yet with the same intent—to thank God for His faithfulness and provision in our lives. In the U.S. it’s symbolized in turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and biscuits with cranberry sauce in the midst of families and loved ones. In India grain and wheat and produce symbolize the first fruits of thankful hearts. Sometimes, however, our need to be thankful hinges on how well things are going for us; how well life is treating us.
John Wesley said: “The gospel of Christ knows of no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness.” If that is true, then our lives must spill over into society. Our holiness must permeate the community. Question is, has it? Every time I read 2 Kings 4:9 and come across the Shunammite woman’s observation of Elisha—“I perceive that he is a holy man of God”—I am challenged. Do people see me as holy? Do they see us, His Church, His Bride, as holy? Do they see our good works and glorify our Father who is in Heaven?
That’s my thought. And it’s come to the surface because I was broken by a provocative video I saw entitled “The Day My God Died."
There’s a sick feeling in the base of your stomach. Like a blow got by, uninvited, uninformed, unobtrusively, and you wince, unsure, deflated, knocked down. On the mat, defenseless and quite vulnerable you wonder how you got there in the first place. You thought you had all bases covered, yet somehow, something got through and you’re not sure what. What is real however, is the sick feeling inside you, the gathering clouds of a depressed state and the sense of despondency that begins to settle over you. Ever been there? Know that feeling? Resonate with what I’m saying? It’s the murky world of shadows, of things unseen, that don’t fight fair, that sneak up on you and leave you feeling violated, compromised or wounded. I’ve been there—and learned some lessons en route.
