Image of fresh produceAh! Thanksgiving.  All over the world celebrated so differently and yet with the same intent—to thank God for His faithfulness and provision in our lives.  In the U.S. it’s symbolized in turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and biscuits with cranberry sauce in the midst of families and loved ones.  In India grain and wheat and produce symbolize the first fruits of thankful hearts.  Sometimes, however, our need to be thankful hinges on how well things are going for us; how well life is treating us.

Which made me think: the leper who was healed and returned to give Jesus thanks, wasn’t suddenly transformed into a rich man with a car and servants and a high profile, well paying job.  All that happened to him was that he got healed.  He was still poor, still unemployed, still shabbily dressed (presumably) —but healed!  Here’s my point: today we may not have a great job, but the job we have pays the bills; we may not be in a great house but it’s a roof with walls and warmth; we may not have a great education but at least we can read and write; we may not be have the best of health but at least our heart still beats.

Are you with me?  I think thankfulness needs to start with just where we are—right here, right now.  And so I’m thankful dear God, for all you’ve done—things I’ve noticed and things that you’ve done unobtrusively—and will proclaim to all who would hear: “Look what the Lord has done!”

I’m so grateful for Thanksgiving!
