He messed up their world

Joseph and MaryThere’s a nip in the air.  Early morning excursions for walkers require slightly bulkier clothing, and in homes and churches the familiar strains of carols are beginning to herald the fact: Christmas is here again.  It’s that time of the year when Christmas trees come out of hibernation, decorations are put out and floral wreaths breathe fresh air once again.

And in churches those familiar passages that surround His birth are once again read and preached about from pulpits.  Zacharias and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph, Shepherds and Wise men, Herod and the towns of Bethlehem and Judea, not forgetting John the Baptizer and his famous call to worship “You brood of vipers,” are all themes that punctuate the season and make us think and ponder those events of two thousand years ago.

And I think about their relevance for our time, their influence on our generation and the significance of their messages for our turbulent, uncertain days and I am so thankful for their lives and their obedience.  Because, when I think of Mary and Joseph and their willing acquiescence to God’s plan, I am humbled.  I thank God that they allowed Him to mess with their plans; I thank God that they underwent ridicule and scorn for the greater good of humanity; I thank God that they thought about others and doing God’s will, however difficult, before their own interests; I thank God that they chose to let God’s will becomes theirs, and I am challenged, during this Christmas season and beyond to emulate them; to do the same, to keep God on the throne in my life, and perchance history may be scripted differently, people around me may get a glimpse of the Saviour, and who knows, but generations to come might be benefited because I chose obedience and Christ-centeredness over selfish, ego-centered concerns.

I am humbled by their choices and motivated by their obedience.  How about you, Beloved?  May the story of the Incarnation—the birth of our Lord and Saviour, refresh, renew and invigorate you, once again during these days.

Agapé
