Spontaneous Giving

ImageSpontaneous applause met the pastor’s announcement. Cries of “alright” and “hallelujah” rent the air as the ushers came forward to take the offering. I couldn’t believe it, my jaw dropped. This couldn’t be right. I must be dreaming. I must have misunderstood the announcement. But as the six men walked through the aisles, they were collecting just what the pastor had announced—the morning offering! I’ve never forgotten that scene. How right! To joyfully give back to God who is the “giver of all good things.”

That particular church went on to send missions teams all around the world and fund the Great Commission through church planting efforts and boy, how they worshipped—it didn’t matter who led, or who sang, or who played, they were in love with the God they worshipped, and it showed in the way they gave. It happens here in India too. Some time back a dear friend told me that there are churches in rural parts of Andhra Pradesh where the offerings are collected in huge gunnysacks—little satin offering bags apparently don’t cut it! Can you imagine that? That’s giving!

Sheila and I learnt years ago to give joyfully to the Lord, and He has taken care of our every need, and I stress “every”. God is so faithful. He lets us/me know that the responsibility to look after us/me, is His, and that He is our/my Jehovah Jireh—the God Who provides. I remember years back, living on a shoestring budget as a student at Houghton College and having a telephone bill come up for payment the next day. Sheila and I looked at each other knowing that we didn’t have the money, and we wondered how God was going to take care of this. Even on this budget we had tithed faithfully every month and knew that the responsibility for paying bills was His. And how He came through! The next day we had a cheque in the mail for the exact amount that we needed for the telephone bill. God doesn’t shortchange us, beloved—He always comes through.

Do you trust Him with your finances? Do you give Him what is His anyway? Or do you “tip” Him every month? All over the world and over the centuries His children have found that God keeps His promises: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. (Mal 3:10-11 NIV)

Today, we give joyfully, over and above the tithe and continue to experience His wonderful provision in our lives. How about you? Is it time you opened your hand to the Lord and said: “Freely you have given, freely too, I give?”

Agapé,

Pastor
