Thanksgiving 2013

Image "The Lord is my strength and shield.  I trust him with all my heart.  He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.  I burst out in songs of thanksgiving." Psalm 28:7

Aren’t those beautiful words?

His part?  He is our strength and shield and He helps me.

My part? To trust Him with all my heart.

The outcome?  My heart is filled with joy.

My response? To burst into songs of thanksgiving!!
However, it is quite possible that we can come to a day like “Thanksgiving” with mixed feelings—on the one hand thankful for life and food and clothing, and on the other facing adverse circumstances on the job front, vexing personal relationships or just struggling with our own inner battles.  And in this context, the season of Thanksgiving can be reduced to a tenuous exercise in putting up a false front or an “all is well” façade.

That’s why I love this psalm.  It anchors our reason for gratefulness in the very character and essence of God.  “He is my shield, He is my strength,” and oh, how wonderful…“He helps me!”  All I have to do is “trust” Him.  And when I do trust Him—“joy” comes flooding back into my soul.  It’s simple, yet profound; straightforward, yet overpowering.  But is He trustworthy? Can I really trust Him?  While the obvious answer is, “Of course, I can.”   The moot question is “Will I?”

And that’s what I want to encourage you to do—to trust Him.  Trust Him with your job scene; trust Him with your relationships; trust Him with your finances; trust Him with your future, and trust Him as the One Who will protect and shield you.  And then, as you cast your cares on Him and trust Him, you will find joy flooding back into your heart.

Will you do it?  Even now as you read this missive, will you take the steps necessary to trust Him?  Go ahead, do it; it only takes a minute but has far-reaching, heavenly consequences.

I hope you did take that moment to renew trust in our awesome God, and now, let “songs of thanksgiving” rise from your grateful heart for all the things He has done.  The words of that old Oatman hymn ring so loud and true: “Count your blessings, name them one by one; and it will surprise you what the Lord has done!

Bring the “songs of thanksgiving” when you come this Sunday and we will raise it up to Him as our anthology of praise!

With a grateful heart,

Agapé,

Pastor
