I Choose...

Stand with me, if you will, and look back.  Look back over the last year.  The year two thousand and three that has entered the portals of history, and reminisce.  Look at January, and those early days of resolve and focus, at commitments made to self and family and friends.  Then move on to February, and try and recollect if you were glad this day had only twenty eight days or whether you felt short-changed by this mini month.  March and its year endings.  April, the heat of May, the damp of the monsoon months and then September and October and the realization that another year is quickly ebbing by.  And now that year has gone and 2004 has dawned, and I wonder what those moments of reminiscing dredged up?  Frustration, at a year that has just sped by?  Or relief that its gone?  Resignation, because another one just like the other one is upon you?  Or anticipation, at the opportunity to start afresh, to forget the ills of the year gone by and build on the gains of the past?

New year, like no other time in the year, offers a chance to reflect, to gather thoughts, to regroup and to focus, and I want you to do just that.  Look ahead to this year, friends, and take fresh guard.  Mentally erase the memories of failures and disappointments and wasted days.  Wipe the slate clean.  It’s a new year.  New opportunities and a fresh start to one more chapter of your life.  This is the time to check out the horizon, link arms with the Lord and begin to visualize those things you need to do, to leave your mark on the year 2004.  Go ahead, Beloved, set goals and dream dreams that will leave your stamp on future generations.  Determine now, the attitude that is going to carry you through the year.  Don’t settle for excuses.  Don’t let circumstances decide your course, chart them yourself.  Take the oars and row.  Resist the temptation to drift, to go as the winds blow, instead look 2004 square in its face and walk into it with determination and resolve, that you’re not going to be just another statistic that walked through this world, but one who left a trail, an indelible trail of courage and vision and fortitude and accomplishment.  That you lived every day to the hilt; that you seized every opportunity and that you touched the lives of others as you walked. And that the world is a better place because you chose to make a difference.

And you can!  You can make a difference.  Because the God you believe in, is the One who has told you: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” (Hebrews 13:5-6)  Further, for tasks He may ask you to accomplish, His Word says: “The One who calls you is faithful and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)  And when fear comes as an intimidating adversary, remember the words of the Chronicler: “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro across the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” (2 Chronicles 16:9a)

So, come on people, don’t leave footprints in the sand that get washed away by the ebb and flow of humanity.  Instead leave ineradicable prints that will stand for posterity, prints etched in concrete, prints that will inspire and motivate ones who come after you to dream big because you did.  And when that final epithet is written, men and women will stand up and say: “That was a life well lived!”

Have a wonderful, exciting, fun-filled, fulfilling 2004.

Agapé
